Overview

The yearning to return home with an overseas MBBS degree is causing hordes of international students, including many Indians, to land in China for pursuing MBBS in China, a country that offers several international programs in medicine. In keeping with this trend, the Shantou University Medical College (SUMC) in China is today a popular destination for studying MBBS abroad. It is an important part of Shantou University (STU), a public university, founded in 1983 with generous support from the Li Ka Shing Foundation.

The college has set a vision for building a world-class university that not only provides excellent educational opportunities, but also endears young people from different parts of the world to public service.

Shantou University Medical College offers a 5 + 3 Joint Bachelor-Master program in Clinical Medicine, a five-year program in Clinical Medicine, a five-year program in Dentistry and Stomatology, a four-year program in Nursing and a series of masters, doctoral and post-doctoral programs in medicine. At present, there are nearly 3000 students enrolled in educational programs at SUMC, including 1,515 undergraduate students, 1,249 master students and 113 doctorate students. Among the 229 full-time faculty members, 62.9% hold a doctorate degree and 47.2% have international experience gained either through studying or working abroad. Shantou University Medical College boasts of an extensive network of five affiliated hospitals with over 5,500 patient beds and six associated partner hospitals to service eastern and northern Guangdong, the Pearl River Delta as well as Hainan and provide clinical training to medical students. This provides international students a great hands-on experience as they engage in the pursuit of MBBS in China.

Upon successful completion of the program, a Bachelor’s Degree of Medicine accredited by the Ministry of Education of China is awarded.

Infrastructure

The new SUMC Medical Education Center located on the main campus has been completed and put into use in 2016, marking a new milestone in the history of SUMC’s development. The new Medical Education Center, designed by Herzog & de Meuron Basel Ltd, covers an area of approximately 50 thousand square meters and houses modernly equipped classrooms, research laboratories, computing rooms and others. The cutting-edge facilities including Simulated Medical Center and Human Life Science Hall enable our students to learn and develop in a stimulated environment. The new SUMC, life sciences-centered and fully multidisciplinary, is well positioned to lead in medical education reforms in China, join the ranks of top research universities and colleges, and produce competent medical professionals to serve the region, the nation and even the world.

Simulated Medical Center

The Simulated Medical Center, formerly named Clinical Skills Training Center, was established in 2002 as the first of its kind in China. The center has recently undergone a significant expansion and upgrade, and has been relocated to the new Medical Education Center on the main campus in 2016. Designed as an actual modern hospital, the center provides an advanced platform for early clinical practice and a sophisticated clinical skills training and assessment base to our medical students and residents from all levels. The nearly 6,000 square meter center runs on the sophisticated technologies and houses a number of multi-purpose training rooms and a full series of state-of-the-art clinic rooms and simulated facilities including intensive care unit (ICU) and hybrid virtual operating room. In addition to standardized patients, the center is equipped with various high-end simulators and virtual network technologies such as SimMan 3G simulator, the first virtual hybrid operating system imported from Sweden in Asia, automatic delivery simulator, simulated laparoscopy training system, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) model, anaesthetic machine, microscopic operating system and multi-functional operating table. Our clinical training courses are strengthened by an extensive collection of virtual learning resources including those shared by Stanford University and University of Alberta. While designed for use by medical students, the facility is also available for first-aid training to groups within and outside the SUMC community.

Human Life Science Hall

The Human Life Science Hall is an interactive, evolving place of discovery of the human body. There are nine stations with over 600 unique human specimens that demonstrate the embryonic development and each organ system of the human body, while the last station features a most technologically advanced anatomy visualization system – Anatomage Table for anatomy education. The Anatomage Table enables students to learn anatomy in 3D exactly as they would on a fresh cadaver and beyond what any cadaver could offer. In the hall, we would like to walk with you in developing deep respect for human life, art and medicine, and in saluting those who donated their bodies for the meaningful cause of medical education.

Campus

SUMC currently has two campuses: one is the original medical campus located at the center of the city, and the other one is shared with the main campus of the university in the northeastern suburb, 6 miles from the heart of downtown Shantou. Students spend their first two years on the main campus and the rest on the medical campus or hospitals. There are regular school buses running between the campuses.

Supported by the Li Ka Shing Foundation, a new Medical Education Center of SUMC has been completed and put into use in 2016. The new SUMC, life sciences-centered and fully multidisciplinary by integrating valuable resources, is a unique and innovative learning environment that unites Man with Nature and is conducive to nurturing creativity among students and staff. The medium of instruction is English. Study of Chinese language compulsory in the 1st year which may be extended further. This is for facilitating effective interaction during clinical period and comfortable stay. Passing of the HSK (Chinese as a Foreign language) mandatory.

Duration

5 years Studies and 1 year Internship. Internship may be done either in the university or in the home country.

10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Admission will be based on high school credentials and Admission Test/Interview.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

SUMC Nursing Department offers a full-range program of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) training both in English and Chinese. The core value of the SUMC BSN program epitomizes innovation, dedication, and professionalism. The program aims to prepare competent beginning practitioners with a strong knowledge base in nursing science and the ability to make sound clinical judgment.

Our Nursing Department launched the English-stream undergraduate program in Nursing from 2013, collaborating with Chinese University of Hong Kong Nethersole School of Nursing as a joint program. The program is four years in duration leading to a bachelor degree.

In recent years, the SUMC Department of Nursing has undergone rapid growth. We have been recognized as one of the unique higher education programs in Guangdong Province in 2010, receiving the provincial “Integrated Pilot Program for Innovation” award in 2014. Our Fundamentals of Nursing course ranked among the prestigious shared courses in Guangdong, and in 2017, the Innovation and Practice of the Nursing Educational Model for Preparing Future Nurses Program won the first prize of college-wide teaching achievements. Since 2008, the graduation rate and the pass rate of the national licensure examination have always been 100%. In 2014, the Degree Office of the State Council authorized the independent Master of Science in Nursing degree (MSN) program at SUMC. Ministry of Education certified the SUMC Nursing program in 2017.

The Department of Nursing is poised to provide unique opportunities for students. The Simulated Medical Center at SUMC, a state-of-the-art clinical simulation and learning center designed as an actual modern hospital, efficiently facilitates students’ acquisition of the professional skills and competencies required in clinical practice. Our platform of international education, which hires American, Irish and Philippine faculty, and invites experts from Hong Kong, Taiwan and U.S.A to conduct international conferences, has also been established. Student exchange program facilitates diversified thinking.

Our program integrates the traditional nursing courses and develops Adult Nursing, Human Structure and Function and Functional Experiments as our characteristic courses. While the pedagogy encompasses essentials of nursing competence, our student-centered education empowers students to learn via innovative approaches emphasizing clinical practice, research, and creativity. Students are also encouraged to learn the career pride from role modeling provided by excellent doctors and nurses as these future nurses participate in the nursing oath ceremony and Nightingale commemorative activities. Centered on the HEART system of health care education, students, as medical volunteers, gain additional experience through the National Hospice Project and the Medical Poverty Alleviation Program sponsored by the Li Ka-Shing Foundation. As part of the American Dreyfus Foundation’s Problem Solving for Better Health Project (PSBHP), we promote student creativity through the efforts of international, interdisciplinary, and multi-major collaborations.

Graduation, Degree and Commencement

In order to graduate with a Bachelor Degree from SUMC, you must Make sure you satisfy all SUMC requirements :

1. Complete all the required courses and pass all the required examinations

2. Fulfill your financial obligations to the school.

Upon successful completion of the nursing program, a Bachelor Degree of Science in Nursing accredited by the Ministry of Education of China will be awarded.

Commencement for all graduating students is held every year in June. It is a university-wide event. Families, friends, and guests are invited to celebrate this important milestone with their graduates.
